hey Tommo;
why not run a 2 to 3 inch strip of checker plate (as wide as you like) between the existing flares and guards.
would take a bit of fabrication, but gota look better than a chunck of old MT's.
plate could be what ever colour you prefer, orange / pink, even natural'

Checker plate sounds nice... but my tool limitations (see opening remarks) might resrict its use. Basically whatever I make has to be manufactured in my lounge room. The cut tyres I was going to do in the scrub somewhere, cos it's just cutting, then take the leftover offcuts to the tip. The garden edging seems the easiest legally satisfying option.

I just realised I'll lose my extra blinker too, which is on the front flare. I'll see if I can silicone it on somewhere nearby when I take the guards off.

OK what about this;
find yourself another set of stock flares and bolt them straight onto the existing ones.
instant double width !

not a bad idea.. nbut wouldnt the seam get in the way.
the reason you expand your flares is to gain some room
as well as legal reasons. just slapping them together .. well wait.. yer thats a great idea tommo.. you should go with that.

Hang on a minute...
I smell sarcasm... or is it the odour of interest in the resulting mess?

Garden edging is still at the top of the list.

As for doing it with tyres: I had a closer look, and half a 10.5 tyre might not be wide enough. Half a 12.5 might do it. Harder to find spare worn out 12.5 width scrub tyres though. Need to see, with tapemeasure.
