We used these in the south african army in the 70's, they work and if you saw where we drove and what we done to the landies it will make most week end warriors cry and run to there mommy and daddies and have the govenment ban such activities because it might hurt them ha ha.

Years ago they had the drums fitted to the front wheels and instead of rolling the rope on the drum you fixed one end of the rope to the front tow point on the truck then ran it up thru a snatch block secured to an anchor point then back to the drum on the wheel (opposite side to the Tow point ) you then wrapped the rope around the drum about 3 turns as the front wheels rotated you kept a strain on the rope end and as it rolled on to the drum the end you were holding came off the other side Remember that a lot of trucks did not have dished rims but the wheel nuts were quite often out beyound the tyres
They were known as a Windlass Winch and are still used today but in different applications
