They are a 285/70/70 R17, so is this ok? By the sounds of it, it is as close to ok as I can get, ie the step down is the factory size

According to BF Goodrich measurements 245 is 800mm dia. 285 is 832mm dia. This means you're 17mm over the VSI 8 allowance of 15mm. I wouldn't sweat it, you'd have to be bloody unlucky to get caught. Cross your fingers and hope that the NCOP becomes law, then you'll be legal.

I'm not so concerned about being caught , it if I had a prang and the insurance doesn't pay out that concerns me..

It's a Procomp Extreme Muddy.

Just change your wheel size sticker to reflect the bigger wheels, makes it all legal, the sticker cant lie

My OEM tyres on my '08 17" rims are 255/75 R17, same as the Rubi. Sticker says so, too.
