So, what are the real downsides of STMaxx in LT275/65R18?

Heavy?

The spare doesn't fit on the bay?

Raised gearing? Increased fuel consumption?

Noise?

Cheers

They are heavier but I've seen or felt no reduction in power or acceleration, there is no way will one fit in the spare wheel compartment, the gearing brings the revs down a bit at 100kph which is good but it makes the speedo read 2 or 3 kays slower than actual. Fuel consumption has probably suffered around 0.5 litre per 100km. The steering is not as sharp as it used to be but I'm used to it now and it feels normal. They are a fair but noisier but are ok at 100kph. They are not for everyone but they suit my requirements.

I was tossing up between the STmaxx and the Cooper AT3, the AT3's are a great choice with out most of the down sides as stated above but they will not offer the same resilience and ability in the bush.

Yep, tyres are a bugga!

I'm thinking I will just replace the LT265/60R18 D697's and use the best one as a second spare. That way I only have to buy 4 of them, not 6 if I go a different tyre/size...

The D697's have given me 50,000 kms hassle free and would be good for a few more if I wasn't about to head off on a trip across the Savannah Way.

Cheers

How do you find them at speed (over 100kph)? Mine were very vague when new, tended to drift around the lane a lot, but they seem fine now. I'm running mine at 36psi.

Also after a bit of offroading, I'm finding my passenger rear is rubbing on the felt, got a little hole there now, but nothing serious. Must catch there when articulating.

BTW: I ended up going for a bridgestone HT 255/70R18 for the spare, same diameter and fits in the spare wheel well. Hopefully I'll never need it!

Yes, not as pointy as the standard tyres and I'm either used to it now (done 6,000km's in the last 2 weeks) or its got better?? I run mine at 44psi... i might have to drop some air out... On the drive up, I had them on 44 cold and ended up with 49psi hot, needless to say I was happy to remove some air when off road and I set them on 40psi cold for the trip home which was more comfortable.

I've not done any serious off roading on them yet but will do in a couple of weeks, I cant wait to test them out. Fraser was not a test.

I'm going to buy another Trailhawk rim and another ST-Maxx and leave it at home until I head off road, then chuck it on the roof rack... If i can lift it that high...

Yeah, I thought about doing that, but it would be an effort.

I'll have to talk to the tyre place about pressures, when I had Mickey Thomsons on the cruiser I talked to the distributor and they said mid 30s citing the stronger sidewalls as the reason for lower pressure. So I've kept it the same for the STMaxx.....
