It's in for the road worthy right now.

Drove it for the first time last night. Are all CJ7's that wild on the road? My guess is the springs and bushes are getting tired. It was like driving a '67 Cadillac the way it floated all over the road.

Dan,

Very sweet original looking unit (I vote keep it that way - there's very few untouched ones left). Regarding the steering wander, check a couple of things:

Slop in steering joint Column -> Intermediate Shaft (there's an aftermarket fix for this)
Slop in steering joint Intermediate Shaft -> Steering Box

Check that the bolts holding the box in place are nipped up but don't overtorque them.

Spring bushes are sometimes an issue but even with worn ones it shouldn't be all over the place.

Biggest cause of wander in CJs is the caster angle - check that you have a large enough tapered shim between axle pads and spring packs to set caster ~6 degrees. The shims sometimes get left off if someone's put a lift or new set of springs in there. With flat caster it will want to go anywhere but in a straight line....

It can take a bit to sort them out but it can be made
To steer better.

Came from Geraldton Wa, saw it advertised just before the Jambo, very neat and straight, I would have liked to buy it

Nice CJ

That's the one, mate. It took nearly a month to get it to Geelong and now I'm sorting out all the bugs to get a roadworthy in Victoria.

One item to go is the front spring shackle bushes. I don't think they are original as they are on the back of the springs and are different sizes. The lower one is like a spring bush with the metal collar inside. I tried to get them out the other day but they are in there good. I'm going to Peddars to see what they can do after work today. (you can see it on the right side of the picture).
Any parts manual I've found they are the same as the rear ones. Took me 1/2 hour to change them.

All seems for not as I will probably change the whole suspension when I get around to the restoration next year.

That set up is a shackle reversal it is not standard

BTW I dont really moderate the CJ section strictly but it would be good to keep the chit chat out of this thread and create a new thread for your questions around bushes etc
