The wiring looks the same the way I look at those diagrams. Although the wires at the CKP sensor in the first diagram read different to the second diagram when both are read left to right, that's not how the diagrams should be looked at.

If you look at the sensors in both diagrams, the pin numbers for the connectors are shown. The wire colours go to the same pin numbers in both diagrams.
1 - 5V
2 - Ground
3 - Signal

Never the less ground and signal are in different positions in each diagram Hence follow wrong diagram and XJ wont run? It really had me stumped I was beginning to think I might of damaged the coolant temp sender wire and would have to unwrap heaps of wire
But the BEER tastes so much better at the moment
Merry Christmas

very glad I could be of assistance, but its got me fucked, I agree with the above...do you mean the wires are in physically different positions, or the wire colors are actually carrying different voltages ?

I should give credit where its due, I cant remember his nickname but the original provider of this manual was a poster that had a '96 since new I think, was an auto electrician, and posted a lot on this forum, but sold his XJ about a year or two ago. He went to the dealer, and photocopied the electrical section. I think he was a Queenslander

I can say that everything but the engine is 95, and I suspect the engine related harness would be a 97 (but it may be unique)..I know the fuse positions in 2 of my '96 are different and do not correspond with the manual.

I wish I could post the whole electrical chapter, but its hundreds of Mbs, and I dont know how to use Google Drive etc.

I originally downloaded it from Limewire.

Us 96 guys got to stick together

I am a qualified electronics technician, and always study the manual
In my opinion, you would have zero chance at the dealer, or an auto elec, unless you got VERY lucky, and struck a genius (or someone that has the manual), which almost no-one does

I have seen the paper copy on USA ebay

It would be a worthwhile investment

In the diagrams, the three wires are the same colours, and are each being used for the same purpose. On the vehicle connectors, the wires are in exactly the same positions.

The order reading left to right in the first diagram is

black/light blue ------ grey/black ------- violet white
Ground -------------- signal ----------- 5V

If the wires were run to the connector in that same left - right manner the sensor would be wired incorrectly.

This is where the pin numbers in the first diagram (shown below the wire colours) are important. Rearranging the wires in pin order, the wires at the connector become

pin 1 ------------ pin 2 --------------- pin 3
violet white ------ black/light blue ------ grey/black
5V --------------- Ground -------------- signal

That then matches the (numerical) order as the wires are shown in the second picture.

I don't know if the 96 wiring diagrams show the connector pin outs as in later FSMs. They can also help when identifying which wires go to which pins.

Hope that explanation helps understanding of my previous post.
