Wow so many factors that often people don't take into consideration:
1. Higher ex-rate means more demand for freight and this higher freight charges. 8 years ago we could air freight for $3/kg. Now its more like $15/kg.
2. Wages are higher here, but also theres compulsory super etc that doesn't apply in the US.
3. The net. Whilst it make supply easier it also dramatically increases compitition (in an already small market). Unlike say 10 years ago many suppliers have now also become competitors. Plus every second backyard bloke wanting to make a buck just puts up a fancy website & volia. Ane naturally every forum out there is full of advice on hpw to best privately import etc.
4. Insurance. Our rate are smoungst the highest in the world. Worse, I challenge people to ring a few insurance companies and ask for public liability on a company importing car parts. Most simply won't touch it, those that will are VERY expensive.
5. GST is frankly creating an unfair playing feild. We can't day to our customers "ok so since its under 1k we dont need to add gst". But thats effectively what the government is doing.
So smaller market/sales combined with higher overheads simply means local prices must be much higher.
Please note I am not defending examples of massive overpricing, nor am I saying the current situation it long term sustsinable. Just another perspective.

But from what I've seen stuff in UK r expensive as well. It's mainly the states that is heaps cheap I think

that may have been the case many years ago, but as a frequent traveller to the UK and Europe, things are much cheaper there including food, clothes, cars, houses, grog, just about everything except petrol

I buy just about everything on line now from overseas, even spark plugs

You forgot one thing, warranty! In most cases when you buy from O/S you can kiss the warranty goodbye or the cost of posting back negates the claim.

If your to sick to work or your job is to physically demanding yeah one can retire when ever they wish, but if one cnt afford to live on ones saving one can just simple pay 48% tax on their super to receive it before the age of 70. So I guess your right big difference!
And the $70 cap per family member only applies to concession card holder.
But in both situations I suppose the 6 months of welfare payments one will be so gracfully affored will be enough to see any Australian though. Lucky county lol
