Interesting priorities.
Only need to pop the plug to check the diff oil.
Using a haynes manual for anything but basics is at best foolish. One of our good members gave me a copy. Saves cleaning ones hands to access a CD manual.
There is a good manual on this site some place.
The very first thing you do when you get an XJ is to check all fluids or better still change them all, including brake fluid.
Worry about extra elec stuff some time down the track when it wont start.

I'm with layback on this one. I only keep the Haynes in the car as an absolute, got 2 flat batteries so no way to charge my phone or iPad to access the PDF factory service manual when on a 2 week trip, last resort. What year is it? I've got 97/98 manuals on PDF I believe.
That and any used car you don't know much of the history always change all the fluids.
If the diff is noisy it could be the bearings if they only replaced the centre. That or they could've put it in wrong (good chance if it wasn't done by experienced diff builders).
If you're polite, we'll have all the time in the world for you... Jeepers are like that ha.
That's my 2c, good luck with it.
