Yeah no probs mate, no skin off my nose if anyone wants to run one there, thought about it myself. I know it's illegal and contemplated doing it knowing it has nothing to do with vehicle safety, purely a revenue issue!
You can believe it has something to do with plate size if that makes you feel ok, but then jap and US low volume imports would not be allowed on road unless they cut up bumpers to fit full size plates??? How many 80s Vettes, 300zx, 180sx etc with cut or folded ends of plates running around that are deemed ADR complient after import!
Anyway for whatever "additional" reason the fact the location is illegal means all additional reasons are mute, but fill your boots though if it suits you.

I've heard of people cutting plates to make them fit the factory mounting bracket, but I'm pretty sure cutting a number plate is illegal too.

Just about everything is illegal.
