I don't know if this will help re the bulbs. I
t's just a comment I'm sure will be challenged from somewhere. As Clarky wrote the SuperCheap rattlers work fine for private use. Had some for a number of years now. Just keep it lubed with what they sell for that. Just read a current Repco Catalogue on line - $69 set -pretty red colour instead of yellow??

The incandescent bulbs do seem to run hot for the space they are given. I agree with Clarky that the grease (which you once got the strangest looks from parts guys when asked for it) will probably help. At least it's now readily available in those little sachets from Supercheap or you can buy tubes if you feel you need the need. It goes a long, long way.
Interesting point you make. All my incandescent bulbs on the rear went like this pretty quickly from new and started to put a brown tinge to the holder over time. I did the grease thing first then I started plodding through finding quite cheap but seeming reliable LED lights to replace them. They run so much cooler and if you are careful they don't get overly bright but I did put CREE bright ones in the Reversing sockets (did not pay a fortune for an OK result). I'm sure I'll be told they are illegal but I like to see rather than run over things and break my Jeep.
I've never seen a light meter in an inspector's hands yet.

Regarding reversing lights:
at about 2 m from the centre of the spare tyre with a light meter:
The incandescent bulbs were about 15 lux ( a couple a candles- HA HA.).
First attempt @ 5 AUD a pair posted were 40lux
and the Cree ones of the same specs for the car but focused light rather than diffuse and at 10AUD posted for 2 pair incl postage (have spares) provide 65 lux.

For reversing light this is quite bright enough but you can see behind clearly when reversing up a track or some obscure place at night. People cast a shadow so if you miss them in blind spots or for whatever reason, they cast a shadow and you see that at least.

Not getting into a debate on semantics and word definitions to try to keep the thread in this nice exchange of pleasantries and healthy discussion.
Very nice idea with the LED replacement lights and I am all for it. Just about all new cars come with them anyway these days. Did you find straight replacement globes or did you have to change the sockets? I have the same brown discoloring on my sockets btw..
The LED's are cheaper too by the looks of things. Paid $10 for 2 new globes yesterday. Not to concerned about being too bright as long they are even on both sides and not brighter than the rear fog light.
The grease is no problem either. Have a tube of "Electrolube" which I use for contacts/plugs/sockets in the car to keep moisture and surface corrosion out. Didn't thought about it to use it on globes as well.

I saw at Repco the red rattling gun and was just about to get it, but thought I ask first as I never owned any air tools despite having a compressor for a few years now. And yes red ones go faster than yellow ones as everyone knows

Yes I made the mistake and should not have played along. I'm sure it will not happen again.

Got to run and start putting my CB radio in otherwise I am running out of time.

I think I found the problem with the rear light globe blowing.
Took it out again to fit a new globe (this time with grease) and I could hear this rattle coming from the rear light housing. After a closer look I saw that the inner clear plastic shell is loos and bouncing around. That shell must have been touching the hot globe and melted a nice round circle into it.
With a bit of fiddling around it snapped back into position and doesn't come loose anymore (I hope and time will tell). Did anybody had the same problem and how did you fix it?

No changes needed to the fitting. Exactly the same - in terms of physical sizing and fitting #. I got these off ebay from China. I have heard arguments about quality but I try to make the $ go as far as it can (within reason). Some things I won't compromise on.

I know some argue they are inferior but I've used some Chinese boards and such from China etc and they've been perfectly serviceable.

On your point re brightness - Yeah they're just right in terms of brightness really even and I'm happy.

One thing I did find - and this is to do with CAN - one unit didn't come on at first so I thought Oh-O rude word re quality - but no, reversed and it was fine - realised it is the specific contact in the lamp holder. I also found that if you insert them whilst the circuit is hot its a no go. Turn the relevant circuit off and its good to go when plugged in and then switched.

I just looked up the bulb specs from the FSM and then made sure I purchased a lamp which was the same - in this case 3157 T25 P27-7W.
I dug up the Packing slip and they were actually $10 each but sold as a pair so I got 2 pairs posted for $40. With a life expectancy of 50 000 hours - I should never have to do it again given I don't reverse everywhere I drive. although sometimes I feel so.
Cheers and good luck with the CB. Always something.

Got the LED's delivered today and put them in. They look well made and solid.
Had the same happening to me with them not working to start off. Reversed them and all good. Took a pic of one put in and I think there is no difference between them. Left side is original and right side is LED. Since it worked out so well I will change the rest of them as well (blinker and reverse lights).
CB radio went in as well without too much trouble. Had good help.
Thanks again for the tip. Was well worth the wait
