I thought about a rough and ready fab for some flares using that white plastic guttering you can get from bunnings (pvc I think) heat gun,can of black paint voila instant flares and a bit nicer looking than garden edging imho.

wouldn't you need a lip thingy ( 90 degree curl over ) to attach them by ?
I would through bolt a double flare set up, rivets would easly "pop" out.
re: the seam, a pair of side-cutters could trim the excess in a flash.
leave the garden edge for the landscapers
besides someone might take to your truck with a wipper snipper.

im sure that you will find that flares have to be somewhat structural.....your wanting to achieve 3 + inches of extra cover per each side with garden edging, rubber extensions and the general fugley fab may still see you getting pinged for not having your tyres covered correctly. In recent events you will notice that those entering tufftruck, tuff tracks and the like have to have have flares somewhat structural, im sure theres a reason to why they did this and it not to stop shit flicking up.

Garden edging is pretty stiff - I reckon in structural strength it would give the originals a good run for their money. A cut up tyre would be stronger again.
Those Flexy-flares are rubbery crapola and far less stiff than any of the suggested options here.
