To say that you want to buy a camper trailer is a bit like saying you want to buy a car - not enough information! Camper trailers vary between low cost tents fitted to standard on-road 6x4 trailers for ~$3000 up to the fully fitted out hard floor units at prices over $50,000.

How many people does it need to sleep, where do you want to take it, and what's your price range?

If you want to look at everything that's available, check out http://www.campertrailers.org/manufacturers.htm. However, Trackabout and Lifestyle have a very good reputation for soft floor campers, Cub for the less expensive hard floor units, and Kimberley and Australian Offroad Campers for top of the range hard floors.

Gusto,
we had a Kimberley Kamper Ltd for 4 1/2 years, and i can happily say it was fantastic.
We dragged it all over Oz, including the cape and the Centre (several times), Vic high country....... we worked out over the entire time we had it we slept in it on average one night out of every 8.... thats a lot of use.

Easy to set up, heaps of storage, ease of use, quality fit and finish, etc etc.
But after 4.5 years and doing most of the trips we wanted to do, it was time to go (to fund house reno's).

The only thing that went wrong with it was a broken shock absorber (in the last 3 months) and one of the zips wasnt engaging properly 9again, just before we sold it, but given the use we had it was sort of expected that stuff would have worn out).

I would have one again tomorrow and recommend them to anyone who asked. however, two things agianst them:
-Price; we paid about $34k all up including extra canvas walls, awnings etc in 2005. A comparable set up now is around $49k. After 4.5 years and plenty of use we sold it for $29.5k, so it cost us $1k a year to flog it mercilessly.
-weight: if you want a solid unbreakable chassis and suspension, plus heaps of extra storage, over 200l of water capacity etc then the trade off is the weight. (Tow vehicle is a GU Pootrol not a Jeep though)

We now have a second hand Red Rock camper- although the one we have was a 'special order' with heavy chassis, extra leaf pack, etc etc. It works, but definitely not same.

Cavalier and Trackabout are 2 that we looked at before finding the Red Rock. I would be happy with either brand, but there are plenty of other quality makes out there.

Make a list of what you want, have a look at a lot, rent a couple of different ones for weekends etc work out your budget and go from there.

I tow an Odyssey Export Signature (equivalent to a Kimberley) which weighs around 1,500 - 1,600 kg fully laden behind a 2.8CRD KJ. I certainly wouldn't even try to tow it behind a TJ, but a JK Unlimited should be OK especially with the 2.8CRD

We owned a tvan for about 2 years and had a lot of good holidays in it . We brought it second hand in excelent condition for $25.000 and sold it 2 years later for the same money, it pays to spend a bit more and buy better quality.
