Gusto,
we had a Kimberley Kamper Ltd for 4 1/2 years, and i can happily say it was fantastic.
We dragged it all over Oz, including the cape and the Centre (several times), Vic high country....... we worked out over the entire time we had it we slept in it on average one night out of every 8.... thats a lot of use.
Easy to set up, heaps of storage, ease of use, quality fit and finish, etc etc.
But after 4.5 years and doing most of the trips we wanted to do, it was time to go (to fund house reno's).
The only thing that went wrong with it was a broken shock absorber (in the last 3 months) and one of the zips wasnt engaging properly 9again, just before we sold it, but given the use we had it was sort of expected that stuff would have worn out).
I would have one again tomorrow and recommend them to anyone who asked. however, two things agianst them:
-Price; we paid about $34k all up including extra canvas walls, awnings etc in 2005. A comparable set up now is around $49k. After 4.5 years and plenty of use we sold it for $29.5k, so it cost us $1k a year to flog it mercilessly.
-weight: if you want a solid unbreakable chassis and suspension, plus heaps of extra storage, over 200l of water capacity etc then the trade off is the weight. (Tow vehicle is a GU Pootrol not a Jeep though)
We now have a second hand Red Rock camper- although the one we have was a 'special order' with heavy chassis, extra leaf pack, etc etc. It works, but definitely not same.
Cavalier and Trackabout are 2 that we looked at before finding the Red Rock. I would be happy with either brand, but there are plenty of other quality makes out there.
Make a list of what you want, have a look at a lot, rent a couple of different ones for weekends etc work out your budget and go from there.
