Well, yesterday my dad decided to pull apart the left hand front wheel on my XJ and have a look at the damage I did when the piston caused the caliper to sieze up.Strangley there is no movement in the wheel bearing despite there being a definate thud thud thud on the way home. The brake pads are stuffed (as expected) apparently they are a light grey colour narly the entire thickness of the pad itself, not good.So new pads needed for sure along with caliper overhaul.he's going to check the right hand side today for any damage but I am pretty concerned about the wheel bearings.

Is it possible to NOT bake a wheel bearing when a brake caliper siezes??And if so what the hell is causing the thud thud thud??

I would suggest that the rotor be checked/replaced....

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Was planning on having the rotor checked when I get the calipers overhauled.Although I am still concerned about the wheel bearing

i would suggest the calipers are the sole problem although if the hubs have 200km-260km+ on them then you are going to do them at some point soon anyways. BUT, if there is no play in the hubs then that is NOT the prob. id start with the calipers and fresh pads (and resfurace the rotors) - dirt cheap compared to hub replacement and u need them anyways. if you want some good calipers i have some used ones here in good nic dirt cheap. might save ya few bucks for an overhaul. either way, start with the brakes and i dont see a reason to do the hubs if there is no play in them. the "thud, thud, thud" is probably brake related (less possibly an axle uni).

Good advice, thanks Rodge I will checkout the axle uni when doing the brakes.Have been considering replacing the calipers altogether but not sure just yet as I have a tight budget. But will do a bit more research into it.Also been thinking my brake pads may have contributed to this all happening as I didn't (for some stupid reason) buy Bendix brand brake pads. That won't be happening again but I'll have it all sorted out in the near future, I hope.

Pulled the fan hub off and put 4 self tappers through it to lock it solid while I wait for a replacement. This keeps the jeep on the road but man does it roar under acceleration now, stays cool though

Cheers
Steve
