Yeah point taken I was generalising a bit with the year thing but tracks in tropic climates would tend to recover quicker than outback. By recover I don't suggest wheel tracks would magically fill in but more so grow over. Obviously terrain will dictate the amount of erosion gully formed etc but not all tracks are irreperable. However the main point I wanted to make which you seem to have missed is stopping people making new tracks, which you have rightly indicated is a bad thing. I don't recall any of the DVD's blazing new tracks but have generally taken old exisiting routes that were or were not regularly covered. Regardless they were not new tracks .

I think we are stuck between a rock and a hard place but stopping use of existing tracks regardless of why will promote the wrong people to create new tracks. Better one hard used existing track than 2 or 3 new ones or the alternative is remove 4WDing from the planet as an unnecessary evil.

I don't know where the line actually is with treading lightly and allowing poeple to enjoy their passtime.

Don't forget Overlander Magazine is published by Express Media Group the same as 4WD Action. They have articles by Glen Hadden from Roo Sytems and Jaime Hazelden from JTS (Jamie's Touring Solutions) and Graham Cahill. Three regulars on the 4WD Action DVD's.
The odd one out is 4X4 Australia as they have no connection.
I still prefer Jeep Action but I do buy 4WD Action for the DVD, tips and ideas.

Well fester has put my point of view across, I've driven a few of the places these blokes go and don't see any problem with what they are doing,I read these mags for what they are, I just don't bother analysing nowadays, many years ago I regularly traversed Morton National Park before it was locked up and with N.P.W.S blessing carried out track repairs, the biggest damage was by Mum Nature, in fact I used to take the rangers out there so they didn't get lost but the main rule of thumb was don't make a new track fix the current one, which should be the rule as it tried to be 40 yrs ago.
Wandered off topic, Overlander and another mag were all you had back in the 70's same thing, Tojo's, Nissans and Landy's but then Jeeps didn't really exist here and still people bitched.
I'm pretty sure the first issue of Overlander had an orange G60 on the cover.......how's that.

On a side note I want to join turbomarts club, whilst I haven't been in a club for a couple of years we never had a Jeep on our books let alone come on a run and I don't believe they have ever had one. Heck I've only ever been on one wheeling weekend where a Jeep was present that I can remember and it was the Coopers Tyres JK on a promo weekend. I'm of course talking about 2 years BC (before grand cherokee)

I believe the actual impact of 4wd tracks is very small, consider the amount of hectares of tracks vs hectares of crown land or national pk. I dare say the percentage of tracks is miniscule. Farming and mining operations have had a much larger impact on our enviroment yet they are still able to operate. And dont forget the forestry industry.

Problem to me is the documented behaviour on some of the DVDs can create a perception problem with the general population, even if the overall damage to tracks in negligible.
