So, in regards to a stock 2dr JK Wrangler sport, a 2.8lt diesel is better then the v6 petrol?

What's crd?

I love the wrangler, looking at buying a used one, and although I'll be driving it as a normal vehicle, my main objective is 4x4ing (camping weekends away) with my mates

Sorta lost track with all the tangents above

Or is the difference minimal?

I'm not concerned about beating people at the lights etc but I don't want to be gimped driving on the road.

common rail diesel.

You won't be gimped...just the diesel has an extra 200km range and drives nicer than the petrols.

Your best off going and test driving them both, then make up your own mind.

You'll find on forums that there are too many biased opinions that are reinforced by personal insecurities rather than facts.

The reason I would consider the petrol 'underpowered' is that the V6 lacks the bottom end of the crd. But of course it does as that is the crd's forte. The problem I have is that it is also lacking compared to the TJ I traded in for it. (I would have bought a crd, but couldn't afford that. )

The practical upshot is, that in the TJ, I could start off uphill from low revs with no problem, but if I want to start slowly uphill in the JK I need to rev it & slip the clutch. Hence it seems underpowered, but it is really just a lack of low end torque compared to the crd to TJ inline 6. Having said that, it also uses less juice than the i6 in my TJ used.

I would love to have the spare cash to fit a supercharger, but if I had had that when I got the JK, I would have just bought the crd instead.
