After fitting Yoms rear ARB bar I decided I didnt like the look of the factory mudflaps on it and they were to hard to remove quickly, so decided it was time for some quick release mudflaps. Being the tight a$$ that I am I thought I would make a set and that way I could get them to sit exactly where I wanted. I looked at differnt commercial ones and they vary from $145 to $180, and I wasn't sure if they would foul on the ARB bar.
So, out came some metal and the welder. Before you go any further reading and looking at pictures, I haven't welded in over 30 years and was armed with a $79 stick welder, so go easy on me!!!
Using a 3mm thick by 50mm wide strip of gal steel for the mount to the chassis and a strip of 30mm x 3mm gal angle and some $30 285x285mm mudflaps from SuperCheap I set about putting my idea into play.
The 50mm plate was drilled to fit under the original bumper mounts like most then bolted in place temporarily. I then grabbed the angle iron and clamped it to the ARB bar with a 20mm thick timber spacer, made sure it was level and at the right height then tacked the angle onto the plate. This way the mud flaps would also be on a slight angle back, following the line of the inside edge of the ARB bar and pointing them away from the tyre to reduce the chances of them catching the tyre and rolling under. Pulled it all off then welded securely.
Then I cut the angle iron off at 100mm long and I had my mounting bracket. After fiddling with it I realised the 3mm plate was going to flex to easily so I cut another matching piece and welded them together (hence the rough looking edges on the plate!)
The mudlfap itself is bolted on to another piece of angle that sits on top of this bracket, which has another piece welded underneath it with a spacer so that it simply slides over the mount.
Once its slid all the way home, a speed clip is slid right through all 3 layers to stop it pulling back out and to hold the inside edge of the mudflap in place. I might replace this down the track with something else that holds the mudflap firmer, but it holds it tight enough for now and doesn't move or rattle.
Installed it sits nicely behind the ARB bar.
and is aligned so that the outside edge is flush with the outer edge of the guards.
All up about $50 worth of parts, the joy of creating something and keeping Mr Plod happy
