according to my inquiries, a shop Laser alignment machine will "correct" for offset axles, so the printout you get does not measure this condition at all
therefore what I do is first establish the
rear wheels/tyres have zero toe in (which they should have on (probably) all vehicles, and can be done simply with a tape measure by measuring the rear insides (preferably) rim or tyre
These two measurements should be the same, or rear toe is out
Once that is established, if you do not have a 4m straight edge,
set up 4 jack stands, run taught string. It should just touch the front and rear of
all 4 tyres
(A straight edge means you can use the rim, which is more accurate)
If the front axle is offset, or toe is incorrect, this will clearly and obviously not be the case
For example, a 2" lift will shift the front axle assembly ~ 1/2"
You can use an online trigonometry calculator to prove this out
I would expect a 5" lift to offset the axle about 1"
I would be surprised if such a well built truck has not has this matter attended, however, following my discussion with pro wheel alignment specialist, I was dumbfounded by their incompetence in respect of a Vintage vehicle I own and rebuilt the front end...even after I showed them what needed doing, they wanted to argue with me, insisting they knew best.
I had to get under the hoist and show them the steering wheel position was irrelevant, and would lead to an improper setting, they still managed to fk it up so bad the front tyres scrubbed in 100 miles...morons
On this vehicle, the setting was done by inserting a 1/4" diameter drill bit into cutouts in the steering box..once everything else is correct, the steering wheel is removed and placed on the splines in the dead ahead position as the final step..hope all that isnt too boring for youse all
