What was the reason for going the 285/50 and not the 275/55?

In the US by the looks of it there are a number of guys running 275/55 of various makes and models with no rubbing issues.

But then nobody here looks to be running this size but there are a couple running 285/50s.

I just figured 275/55 is only slightly wider and higher than the std 265/50 so should be OK.

The 275/55/20 is actually larger (in diameter) than the 285/50/20. I had heard that the dealers can recal the speedo through their diagnostic tools when they connect to the diagnostic port.

This was part of my reasoning for going with the 275/55, a bit more wall height to play with when deflating tyres.

151mm vs 142mm according to the online tyre calculator I was playing with.

But I did look under the front wheel arch this morning at that bolt will be mighty close.......

I hope our US friends aren't leading me astray.

I have the same experience and plans as the OP but I haven't bought the JGC yet. A dealer offered to put the Laredo 18" stock wheels on to a new MY14 Limited in place of the 20" wheels for me. Do you guys think that's a good idea? I am planning on Gibb River Rd, Birdsville and Fraser Island when I have the experience.

I had the 275/55 LTZs fitted yesterday and no issues.

It does run close to the bolt on the suspension but the fitter said he had seen closer in his day.

I am happy with them. They give the truck a more purposeful stance and will be a million times better off-road than what was on there.

They do give off a much more noticeable hum but it is not intrusive.

I have still not done a speedo check vs the GPS but I will do that over the weekend and see what the difference is.
