When u talk about load on the transfer and g/box there is no less stress with lowere gearing as the maxiumn tourque of the motor does not change.
False - I know of two ax-15 trannies that have been rebuilt - and in each case I suspect bigger tyres & stock ratios was the cause.....
Matt explained it nicely how the gears lessen the load on the driveline....
I even recall a discussion I had with (ex)SubMick where he said he thinks stock ratios and bigger tyres are one of the main causes of output shaft failure - because of the extra driveline load....
True the engine trque output doesn't change - BUT bet the load on the engine/ transmission/transfer case and tail shafts most definately does increase with bigger tyres and the only way to lessen it is by regearing...

I was even talkng to a couple of the outback challenge boys about it (incase u want to argue with their offroad abiltiy wolf they are very competitive) and they said the same thing. Ratios do not take load off the drive line as what puts the load on is the tourque of the motor and ratios dont change that.
BWAAAHAA yer kidding right? Either they misunderstood your question or you misinterprited their answer then.....Seriously you are wrong....

Oh yes and whts this bull s?*T about the computuer???? Thats pure crap... Mate who ever tells u that are full of sh*?. Jeep are one of the only cars produced that self tune to the extent that they do.....
Now I think your smoking something.....Yes the Jeep does "self tune" but I'm sorry the CPU used in Jeeps is VERY similar to what is used in many vehicles.....Then if you look at MANY current day 4bees you'll see they ahve systems that make the Jeep look like an antique....Not that I have a problem with it - but I would not claim it to be as sophisticated as you claim......

Black, I look forward to the day you drive a regeared TJ so you can truely understand the benefits of doing this mods are......
Wooder,
I am an autoelec by trade. I have had alot to do with computers and the on in the Jeep they are very very different for other 4bies. The adjust to changes alot more rapidly and effiecntly than any other stock computer out there. And yes they are very primative however very effective.
Interms of load on the drive line the out back challenge guys understood perfectly. The touque of ur motor is what determins the load when u add more resistance eg larger tyres the maxiumn load that u put on those parts is all the same because the motor can't physically changer it power or tourque outputs, however it gets there quicker.
On standard ratios in low i can crawl without a proble. I honsetly don't need to go any slower.
Interms of 5th I towed a camper up the coast this weekend and while i couldn't hold 5th on any hill she still handeled it on the flat.

At the end of the day the setup i have works well and i have the trophies to show for it.... and non of them are for speed driving. all crwling and technique based comps..... So spend ur money on what ever u want to but i am happy with what i have. I have spent alot of money on the truck to set it up for comp and serious wheeling and ratios are still on the bottom of the list/

Black,

Yup you hit the nail on the head - ie as long as YOU are happy with it.....I think we'll need to agree2disagree on this one
But one last thing for you to ponder...Newtons law.....

All this torque not enough action!

I suppose the way i see it (am gearing to 4.88's NOW) is that my tj with 32's - with some - ahem- perf mods will poke along in 5th on the flat with 3.07's and the motor labouring well below the peak of the torque curve - as such fuel consumption goes up and i go slow.....

The amount of load on the drive train being the same? wtf? your kidding right - unless your going to be generating max load at all times? surely you find 1st gear has more stick than 3rd right? if so then how is that any different to lower gearing?....

Maybe i'm a but biased, but maybe i've also done mechnaical engineering .... so in terms of generating loading on the drivetrain, IMHO you would never generate the same load on from the diff's inward (driveshaft to transfer case to gearbox) with lower gearing.

Actually - I'll get my mate Sir Issac to explain

The amount of torque on the driveline is directly proportional to the load, lower gearing reduces the load.

And when using engine braking, the beauty is that you win again! remember that 4.88's load the drive line under engine braking at ~20% of the tortional load whereas 3.08's load at ~32%.
Using real numbers - torque at rear wheel of say 100 NM becomes:
with 3.07's ~ 32 NM
with 4.88's ~ 20 NM

Hey - it's seems my dark secret past of being a geek before I became a nerd is out.

Having said all that - fit a thumpin 360 and stop friggin around with gearing - just get more cubes baby!

Changing gear ratios is by far the single best modification you can do to your Jeep. I have to disagree with Black TJ as well, winning a few trophies doesn't support your argument in itself. I have seen at least a couple of TJs with grenaded transfer cases/driveshafts that were attributed to driveline stress with stock gearing.
