When I adjust my toe in, which is quite often as I keep smacking the tie rod on stuff, I set it between 0mm and 1mm using modified tent pole technology.
Works for me.

1/8 inch toe in at edge of tread on 35"s is about perfect. mark tread block both sides rotate tyres 180 degrees to check use same tread blocks to ensure accuracy

Thanks for that guys mine is not pulling left but has the wandering feel to it, will be going back to the aligner today to set the toe after I've adjusted the caster.

To bring caster back to 4-5 deg from 6 deg, should I be lengthing the upper control arms?

I measure on the rim, not the tyre. More accurate.
But as you say, pick the same reference point regardless of how you do it.
I adjust it with the wheels static and then do the final check by rolling the car forward to pick up the reference point but it is always still correct.
My rims must still be in good condition.

Forgot to mention, the measurement out at the tyre tread would be greater than at the rim.
My measurement would be more like 0mm to 2mm out at the tread. Would depend on the tyres profile exactly what the measurement would be.

I've kind of been sitting on the fence waiting for someone else to answer this. More curiosity than anything.
Yes, you can lengthen the top or shorten the bottom, but this depends where your axle is currently set?
You are going to set the caster yourself, but then get the simple toe in setting done on a machine
If you have to do a simple adjustment on a front end alignment machine, you would be better off getting the whole thing aligned as these things effect the tracking and handling characteristics of the whole vehicle!

I've got mine pretty good but will be replacing the ball joints to get it 100%.
