The Procal reprograms the fog lights so that they do just this. Start the motor and engage drive and release the handbrake and they switch on. Pull the handbrake on or drop an auto out of drive or turn on the headlights and they switch off. Interestingly the NRMA quote specifies they must be aimed correctly - there is no ADR requirement for this as they are not normally a focused beam - like the LED strips appearing on many new cars these days.
Mmmmm that's a really good point... Maybe they just refer to ones that are able to be aimed? That's interesting about the 25w limit considering not all lights are equally efficient in terms of lumens per watt. But I'll stop derailing the thread now

So in other words the only real difference between a front fog light and a day running light (ie the only one the boys in blue can really test on the side of the road) is the method by which they're switched on. Not really much point in having the "only use fog lights in fog" rule if that's the case.

Strange that DRL's are supposed to switch off when the main lights come on. I'm sure I've seen plenty that don't. And if that's the case, how do the truckies get away with having their rigs lit up like Xmas trees? Are they any less distracting because the lights are all different colours?

That is an interesting point about them not switching off. Just had a look over the ADR's and they (ADR76) dont mention the switching off part, and I notice a lot of European vehicles now with the LED strip DRL's don't switch off. Yet the QLD regs clearly state it! So most new Euro vehicles are not legal on QLD roads!

Daytime running lights

A pair of daytime running lights may be fitted to a motor vehicle.
A pair of daytime running lights fitted to a motor vehicle with 4 or more wheels must be fitted with the centre of each light:

(a) at least 600mm from the centre of the other light; and
(b) not over 510mm from the nearer side of the vehicle.

However, a pair of daytime running lights fitted to a motor vehicle under 1300mm wide may be fitted with the centre of each light not under 400mm from the centre of the other light.

When on, a daytime running light must:

(a) show a white or yellow light visible from the front of the vehicle; and
(b) not use over 25W.

Daytime running lights must be wired so they are off when a headlight, other than a headlight being used as a flashing signal, is on.
The ADR's don't actually mention the 25 watt limit, they state not more than 400cd

The 25W limit would have been pre-HID/LED specs and would have now been updated to 400cd to cover newer lighting methods.

Most likely as the ADR was updated in 2006. But of couese QLD regs are never updated.. Surprised they talk about tyres and not rolling pieces of stone!
