LOL

A 'tell' of my age according to a birth certificate, Charlie. In my teens I was a subscriber to the (long defunct) Australian Sports Car World Quarterly (as well as to Wheels, Modern Motor, Auto Action, Racing Car News . . . you get the picture).

SCWQ had a writer on staff called Bill Tuckey, who also used to write under the name Romsey Quints. 'Romsey' used to write deeply satirical pieces; lambasting industry policy, poor driving and even poorer motor cars. He once road tested a Sydney City Council Road Roller over the Wheels road test course (including laps of Oran Park with braking tests and so on) and compared it favourably with the HQ Holden. All in a very 'pukka' style . . . you imagined him wearing a dear stalker and all that. Romsey was probably once a Spitfire pilot or, in the least, a Major in the British Army at the time of the Raj. A sort of literary Peter Jansen. But, it was hilarious, very clever, stuff (as was Jansen when he wanted to be).

So, it's a doff of the cap to a bygone era of writing I guess.
