So after 3 years it looks like the eeepc will be retired along with the touch screen etc. Nothing wrong with it but the prices of Android tablets have come down enough to make them a budget upgrade and the screens are so much better than any aftermarket touch screen option.
So here's the plan. Replace the screen with a tablet mount for a Motorola Xoom and remove the eeepc altogether, it might see new duty in the camper.
I got the Xoom as it is a 3.2 Android tablet, has 32GB built in with a slot for another 32GB (Read only but perfect for music and videos). The screen on this is 1280x800 so up from 800x600 and on top of that its a very nice screen. The other thing is the Xoom is on Motorolas list of tablets that will get 4.0 of Android
Because this is not a new tablet, 9 months old now, it was only $397 from JB Hifi. It doesn't have 3G (no provision for a SIM card at all) but is easy enough to Tether with my Galaxy SII for internet on the road if needed.
So far I have copied all my Oziexplorer maps across and am running Androzic for offroad mapping with them. I've also loaded Sygic for street mapping, which I like a lot so far and is a decent jump forward from Garmin Mobile PC that I run at the moment. I've also loaded Torque for bluetooth connection to the ODBII bluetooth dongle.
I'll give it all a test this weekend while the eeepc is still installed and then do the swap over Christmas.
Cheers
Steve
