A Toyota 76 series wagon V8 diesel, but would have to spend almost as much on that as the XJ to get the suspension to work properly with long travel.

If Australia did not have such silly laws and you could road register a Bowler Wildcat, then they would make an excellent fun truck.

I looked at lots of 4WD/AWDs before signing for the JK and trailer combo. Came from a few Subarus (Fozzers and Libs), and while they're excellent units I was exceeding their off road envelope just too often. Tried a LR Defender: very practical and capable but too slow and uncomfortable. A Nissan X-Trail: bit too small and no diesel variant at the time. A Ford Territory: big, comfy but not enough ground clearance and very thirsty (again, no diesel). Hyundai Santa Fe and Mitsu Pajero SWB were high on the list...yawn. In the end, though, I reckon I would've ended up with a dual cab ute of some form, a Navara or Ranger most likely.
