If u flip it and then run reverse cut gears u are back to stock again, u either flip it or run reverse gears.

If u have a low pinion front diff u would flip it, if u have a high pinion front diff u would install reverse gears.

That's ok for a buggy - but I'll jump in here & say that's not a good idea for a road rig since the oiling chambers would be completely wrong.

reverse cut gears don't run backwards. the helix is just cut in reverse so that you drive on the strong side of the gear in a high pinion/front axle situation or similar. if you turn a diff upside down it will run backwards regardless of gearset. (unless the engine is spun around backwards)

So flipped with reverse cut gears is the go?

The only problem with that with GQ front diffs is that it converts the high pinion into a low pinion.

if you want your car to go backwards or want to put the engine in the back. that is the only reason to rotate the diffs upside-down.
a front diff moved to the rear, right-way-up, still turns the correct way.

you don't have to flip it... unless you build a rear engined buggy then you will have to flip both front and rear diffs.

Think about it - the direction of rotation is governed by the engine and t'case...

If you buy an aftermarket diff centre - like a Rockcrusher - you don't buy a front and a rear one... they are the same! The gears are the same front and rear too.

As wooders said, when you use a front diff as a rear diff there can be oiling issues... but this is only an issue if you intend to drive it on the road/highway... unless you run Rockcrushers or similar.

OK I've got it now, don't mind me

What about track? I've now decided the diffs I'm going to be using, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be running them full width. What's the average WMS to WMS track of a good buggy?
