Not great news at all, frustration must be huge.............

Did anyone check the HP mesh screen to see if crap in it or do a fuel pressure reading at cranking ?? Though was my belief if the HPFP fails it does so without warning so you may be lucky in that respect...

Wish you luck in getting it solved.

Could be misguided, but my understanding of the issue was that the mesh screen itself disintegrates and, when it lets go, causes the issues. If that's the case, I can't see how it would be a slow build-up of debris behind the mesh that limits flow.

Happy to be corrected

This write up gives a pretty good description of the how and the why I think...

Beauty, thanks mate - super helpful.

Definitely sounds like it's a 'once it's dead, it's dead for good' type problem, not an intermittent one.

Ive been trying to find the bookmark but it has vanished but pretty sure it is the metering valve, the bit on top with an electrical connection I think its called the fuel quality solenoid in the WSM other names for elsewhere. it has an 80micron screen in it if I recall correctly, again the problem seem to be prominent in units with the CP4 that doesn't have a LP lift pump or where the LP pump drops pressure, runs out of fuel and then creates air bubbles which combined with the low lubrication of US diesel the pump valve chews itself and eventually blocks the screen and metal goes right thru the injectors and return lines ........ sounds feasable to me, our LP tank pump is supposed to push fuel at 58-65 psi with the HP Pump thumping it to around the 28K psi......

Have a look at this pdf link it shows that VW went thru a similar if not same scenario many years ago with the CP4; https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=...AAAAAdAAAAABAD

The metering valve removed showing screen............while its from a Duramax I doubt ours would be different.
