Ok, finally picked up the WH Diesel Grand.

Filled her up at the station in Perth and had a 50k drive home.

Impressed! She sat on 100 and purred. I reset the economy gauge at the servo and was getting 9.8 on the way home..

The ABS light wasn’t on, and no warnings were on, when I first started driving. After some stopping and starting, they came on.

When I got home, I turned her off and restarted her. All lights and warnings off. I was easily able to put it in 4 Low from N. Drove back and forth...no warnings.

I am thinking I have a few dodgy abs sensors, and this sets everything off. I have a front and a rear sensor on the way.

So, the good.
She drives great. Transmission is solid. Brakes and suspension are solid. Engine sounds and runs great. Cooling great. Body, tyres, controls etc all good. She is a good solid ex country car.

The not so good.
The classic thud from D to N to R is there. I checked the diff bushes and they are cracked...I have some on the way..

I could hear the drive shaft very faintly. Checked it for play and there was a bit of front/back movement. I have a CV coming.

Cruise control. Light comes on, but it won’t activate. This is while I was driving home with abs light on, so not sure if related.

Key fob on spare key. It starts the car, but the buttons are knackered.

Oil leak. The underneath of the car was pretty messy. It’s seemed to be everywhere and going right up into the engine. Impossible to see where it was from. The service book mentions an engine oil leak a few times. Probably still the same leak, just never fixed.

I had the car on ramps, so I gave it a degrease and pressure wash....

It came up really clean. I got soaked in muck, and the ants nearly ate me alive.
I then ran the car for 10 minutes while I laid underneath with a torch. Not a single drip or whiff of oil the whole time. At least I will be able to track it down now.

I took the cowl off the engine to reveal the elephant hose. The back clamp was loose. There was oil in the hose, but the turbo was only damp. The 1” hose has been leaking from both ends. Just wondering if that’s my engine oil leak.

That black canister has a lot of oils on and around it.
I have a silicone T piece coming to do the ehm. Will also look at a Provent.

I plugged my elm scanner in. Jscan could identify the vin, so I registered it. Besides that, it could not pick up any data. I will order one of the models they recommend.

Daughter loves the car. She’s sitting in it now, blasting out Spotify tunes through the Bluetooth hands free unit she just bought for it.

I ordered the correct obd2 reader for the JScan app. There’s a mob in Perth that sell them, and I’m getting it expressed down. Itching to check codes.

I also ordered a genuine fake Provent with the 25mm inlet/outlet, 5 years warranty and cotton filters (instead of mesh). I want to get rid of that CCV pipe and it’s associated oil weeps. Ordered 3 meters of 25mm oil resistant pipe to go with it.

Cheers,

Can’t go too wrong with all that Axel. I will be interested to see where the oil leak emanates from. Amazing how it always works it’s way through the engine down to the bottom. Hopefully it is the elephant hose, but if it isn’t it’s all fixable.

Cheers Fishframe, yep, all fixable. We have been driving it around and the ABS light hasn't popped up again. Obviously an intermittent problem. I read that if the ABS light is on, then that can affect the cruise control.. everything is interlinked. Anyway, that's probably my cruise problem.

I raised the vehicle again and still no oil coming down from the cleaned engine/transmission. Could be anything, but its not a fast leak.

We noticed the aircon control knobs are not illuminated at night. Went online and its common as muck. I ordered 3 x 2162 backlight bulbs and will have a go at soldering them into the circuit board. Jeep really went all out on making things hard.

My keyfob that is damaged is working again. I put a battery in it, and it would open the doors and start the car. The close door button and contact were missing. I put some tin foil in there and it worked on locking the doors when i pushed it. Ive ordered a $10 blank key fob, and will strip parts off it to get my original going.

Slowly working through the faults, but she is driving great and everything is working nicely.

Cheers,

The black canister thing that has the hose going to the turbo inlet tube, is the CCV. It basically allows blow by gases (and oil) feed back into the engines intake. The inlet turbo is notorious for leaking the blow by oil out. The leaked oil finds it way down to the swirl motor and kills it, then travels down into the valley of the engine, pools there, and then drips down the back of the engine, down over the bellhousing, and under the engine where the trans meets up.

Therefore the oily engine underneath could be from the CCV tube / turbo inlet pipe. Fingers crossed it is.

Good call getting the ProVent oil catch can, cos it will get rid of this blowby oil mess and prevent it from entering the intak system (where oil should never be).

The other main reason why oil runs down the back of the engine is worn engine oil cooler seals. The oil cooler is located in the valley of the engine, hard to get to, need eveything above it to be removed. The seals go hard over time and leak oil. As above, the oil runs down the back of the engine, down the bellhousing.

The ABS fault is most likely a wheel speed sensor, which sounds like you're onto it. When you get OBD JScan running, it will be able to tell you exactly which wheel sensor is faulty. When anything in the ABS system is faulty, cruise control won't work for safety reasons.

Best thing to do for the key, is buy a blank key fob on eBay as they're cheap, and get a local locksmith with the Chrysler software to program it to your Jeep (and cut it obviously). I have used "Central Parts Perth" (wrecker, who have many Jeep parts, in Malaga) before and they charged about $100 to do this.

Nice Jeep you have purchased. These probs are nothing out of the ordinary, esp for a vehicle of this age. Once tidied up will be a really nice ride.

Thanks for the heads up Turismo. Ive got the Vgate icar Pro on the way from a WA seller via express post. Hopefully be able to diagnose a few things asap. The ABS light popped up again today, and the clunk from the front when going R to D was very prominent. But, she is a great beast. I'll get on top of the things i can when my spare parts from Rockauto arrive.

I'll keep an eye on where that oil leak is coming from. I am going on a longer drive in a few days, so will get under her again and look for signs of a leak.

If it is the oil cooler, then no problem there. I'll just plan a few days in the new year to tackle it and get my boy to start doing some spanner work.
Looking at this kit if we have to do it.

It was pretty stinking hot in Perth today, and the aircon in the Grand was icy cold. She always starts within a split second of cranking. Brakes don't pulse and are very strong. Steering positive and no pulling to one side or the other.

The only other maintenance items i have added to the list are a small park light bulb and the lift glass struts.

I have an Ebay fob key blank coming for $10. It doesn't have the electronics.. You just put your original electronics in and get the key cut. I have two working ones now, but they are looking a little shabby with missing buttons and worn keys.

Looking forward to getting my scanner in the next day or two, and i'll give you guys an update on the codes she is bound to have stored.

On another note, even though the ABS light came on again today, and it blinked Service 4WD, i was still able to put it in 4LO. I could hear the servo putting it in and the message on the dash confirming 4LO. So the software updates and mechanical parts on this Jeep for the 4WD system are all in good order.

Cheers,
