XJ Cherokee Conked out today
Hello Brains trust, been a while since I posted.
After years of trouble free running my XJ 2000 4 l petrol model has let me down. Driving home tonight she gave a few mis fires then kept running for about 1 minute then the engine stopped. It started again and about 1 klm down the road it stopped again. Now it wont start. After a few minutes it will start and then stop again. To me it seems like the fuel pump. Any ideas as to what it might be. Where is the fuel pump located on a 2000 XJ ?
Update...Went out to see if it would start and it did. Running well so went around the block twice and its going ok ?? But I don't trust it to go further. Maybe a sensor playing up when its hot ?
Have you guys got any ideas ?
Cheers
Ron.

Hey Ron, There are many posts about this sort of problem. Often its the crank position sensor. Its located down the back of the engine. Some have been in your situation & poured cold water on it & it starts. Maybe try it.

thermally related fails, suspect Crank sensor, coil, cam sensor, in that order.
like he said with the water, also works on coil, not so much with the cam sensor.
good luck with it.

Typical symptoms of a CPS going bad. Located top of bellhousing on the passenger side. Check parts as per Rainman.

Thanks for your help guys. It sounds like it might be the CPS. Is it easy to get at to replace by an amateur weekend mechanic like myself ??
I test drove the XJ on the weekend and its starts fine when cold but after a few klms it cuts out. Did this a few times.
Where would a get a new CPS from ? and any idea on cost.
Cheers

just don't buy a crank position sensor from 4x4 point on ebay. I made that mistake.
