Unhappy engine mount bolts

hello all, was wandering if anyone could help. I have a 95xj petrol, and the 3 bolts that hold the engine mount bracket to the block have broken. Big dramas motor nearly on ground, not good. The bolts are still in the block and i dont know how to get them out or should i drill and tap, but i dont know what size and length etc. Any advice in the matter would be greatly appreciated.

They are 3/8" bolts and you have to buy Cobalt drill bits to drill them out with. You will need a right angle drill to do it with and even have to cut down the drill bits just to get them in there. It is a prick of a job and have had to do a couple of 95 Cherokees so far! Ask Jeepdownunder about them or look here http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...t=engine+mount

thanks gojeep sounds like i'm in for some blood sweat and tears. Two of the bolts look as if they have been broken for some time (being rusty looking) And have had a vibration that i haven't been able to track down, now thats obvious where that was coming from. Put it in to a so called jeep specialist a couple of weeks ago to find that vibe (that has been there for months) they said it drove just fine but replaced the mount on the other side, so go figure that one. I guess all i need to know is how deep should i drill? and thanks.

how good are you with a welder
if you are careful here is a easy way to remove them
it the bolts are 3/8 take a5/16 flat washer and tack apiece of 12mm x 3mm flat bar
to the washer so it looks like this o== take this item when cool put over the broken stud so you can tap the flat with a small hammer in the direction that it would normaly undo NOW HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART YOU MUST PUT THE EARTH CLAMP ON THIS PIECE OF FLAT BAR!
have someone stand by with hose
just in ccase and fire extingiusure
and sheild fuel lines
###note disconnect battery and main ecm plug to protect it by putting the earth on the flat tab the current flow wont go any whare except through the washer####

weld the center hole in the washer to the top of the stud then wack weld with hammer what happens is the heated bolt contracts and shrinks in the hole
the flat bar gives you something to tap to rotate the bolt out of its hole

i know this may seem strange to some people but ihave done this at least 100 tmes before on grade 8 and grade 12 bolts these are hard to drill
by the way i am boilermaker 1st class welder by trade.
you just need to take care as you do this

Well i'm not that confident with a welder, probably end up welding the washer to the block (cursed with bad luck). But sounds like a safer bet. If you were on this side of the world i'd be employing your skills. Know any good welders in brissy? I can take it to them if i have to, it is still driveable. They broke at landcruiser park so i used the drag chain, slung between the mounts to hold it up. Nearly as good as new.

Funny this should happen today...

Talking to a guy today and he had the same problem. He welded a flat washer with a mig welder (just tacked it) then welded a nut to the washer and then just screwed them out. He raised the engine a little by releasing all the engine mounts and jacked it up a few inches. He replaced all the bolts. Like me he was discusted but to the extent he sold the XJ. Now has a Nisson Patrol reckons he'll never drive a Jeep again...(Sad) but I understood. The bolts are pathetic!!!
