strutts and brakes
Hi,
I assume you mean the gas struts for the rear hatch. For my '98 XJ had mine re-gassed as I was quoted something like $130 each for new ones.
Rear brakes are Drums because Jeeps are from the US where, unfortunately, rear disks as standard is a big news feature in 2003 some 20 yrs after the rest of the world.
I thought there was only one size drums on XJ in Aus. I think US had two sizes, 10 * 1.75" and 9 * 2.5" depends on axle model prior to 1994. I thought Aus XJ all get Dana D35 rear axle with same brakes.
I and others have done rear-disk brake conversions with great success but the conversions require considerable work. There is a thread somewhere here from late 2002 when we were all discussing it. Check out the gojeep web site for details of his conversion.
I had done my rear drum brakes before I had disks. Exchange bonded brake shoes are cheapest, available from many brake shops eg Better brakes and so on. Jeep charged me $250 some time back for new shoes!
Wheel cylinders normally shouldn't need changing, however..... If you go through much water, mud or 4wd in dust, chances are you need new ones. My opinion is brakes aren't worth skimping on, just get new ones. Jeep charged me $75 for each wheel cyl. I think Suburban 4wd have them much cheaper. Suburban also have exchange shoes/linings too. In other states USA4*4 and other Jeep suppliers can also help.
I threw out the self adjusters on my drums and just regularly adjusted them myself. Then changed to self adjusting disks from a 1988 Falcon. Would never change back to drums.
Cheers
