Default WK2 Recovery Points

Hi,

Looking at purchasing the following Recovery Points through Ohio Diesel Parts on MY14 Laredo (mainly because they can be bought in a pair cheaper than Chief Products can supply).

https://www.ohiodieselparts.com/prod...011-2016-steel

I've read about earlier OEM hooks not fitting the Aus export model WK2, so am wondering if this will be an issue with the US built Ohio Diesel points? Advice from Ohio Diesel was "can't see why not?" - which doesn't reassure me much.

If anyone has had any experience with these, I would love some feedback.

Thanks all.

From what I understand, these guys ripped off Cheif’s design and engineering.
Chief spent money on designing, testing and getting engineer certificates and Ohio has come along at the end and ripped them off.

I know they are cheaper, but that’s because they haven’t spent anywhere near as much on R&D.

I’d personally be supporting local and the original - plus your guaranteed extra protections under Australian consumer law.

Supporting Cheif also means you are assisting them in creating more WK2 accessories.

Not with these, but i got a pair of red ones from Uneek. Quick delivery, relatively easy to fit if you have the right tools and someone with know how.... and look good too.
And they work.

Chief Products may not be the cheapest, but they’re one of very few companies producing accessories for the WK2. The products are excellent quality and I’m willing to pay the extra few dollars to support a local product that will fit first time.

Whilst that may be true mate, it is a recovery hook consisting of a single part that either fits or it doesn't and is either strong enough or isn't....very basic R&D required.

There was discussion about this on the WK2 facebook page. Bill from Chief weighed in and talked about the 2nd mounting plate being longer actually added to the strength when the engineer evaluated the prototype design. Also there were question marks about the bolt spec.

So in my view the rip offs from the US won't be rated, or not as strong as the chief ones. And after you get the US ones shipped, you are probably saving $100.

Other than that, yes they should still fit, the ones that don't fit have the extra bolts that brace to the cross-member.

Here was Bill's feedback on FB:

Our product is engineer rated to 4,500kg. I don’t believe the copy version is engineer rated. The copy doesn’t use a middle mounting plate or a 3rd strengthening bolt. We found these features were critical to strength during off-axis pulls. The copy only uses 8.8 mounting hardware instead of 10.9, which would significantly reduce the clamping force and therefore the load rating. The copy doesn’t use anti-corrosion primer to prevent corrosion. Finally, the copy doesn’t provide a 5mm radius front edge, that is required for compliance with ADR in Australia. It’s definitely tough to see a similar product cheaper, but I’m guessing if they included the above features (and had some engineering costs to recoup) the price would be very similar.
