What LeighP had done was a clone of his key. $100-150 is about right. Always go to a locksmith and ask them to cut you new key to code, not copy like a kiosk will do.
Even if you don't have your key data available a good locksmith will "decode" you key, punch the cuts into their software and cut your replacement to code, giving you a key cut to factory specs. Not a worn copy.

Locksmiths & especially Auto locksmiths are able to produce keys for your vehicle when all keys are lost without a visit to the dealer. Up to 5 years ago the dealer was mostly the only option. But no so these days. Yes a locksmith can come close to dealer costs if he has to come to you and is supplying dealer or aftermarket keys, but he can get you going the same day. Remember, you don't loose time from work, organizing a tow/tilt-tray to the dealer.

The beat piece of advice is to ALLWAYS have a spare. especially when away on holidays.
My advice if your a surfer or swimmer is to get a non remote chip key done and hide it in the vehicle. Then get a plain key (brass) for a swimmer. put it on a wrist band, pocket of your boardies etc or even cut down with little or no head for your wallet.

What did you use to program the key?

A dedicated locksmith key programmer made by a uk company.

The device in the pic is only the remote generator, you still need the 4 digit pin code and diagnostic programmer to add the key/keys.

In the case of the commander because the vehicle uses a PCF7941 Philips IC chip the remote programs at the same time as the immobilizer.
