Ok next question just for current piece of mind while I'm deciding what to do.

If I lose my only key right now, am I able to order a replacement key through the dealer by maybe quoting my VIN number and would it be all good and not require replacement barrels or further work to have it operational?

When I ordered my spare key It was ordered by the VIN number.
Was sent an exact duplicate two button key that fits all locks & ignition
Like this one on the right without the panic button

G'day mate, it is best to contact the dealer and order another key from your VIN. It will come with the key cut and remote and all it will need is to be programmed. It requires a 4 digit number to program it which can only be given to certified CJD techs from Chrysler themselves. Hope this was clear and helped you out.

I went to my local locksmith (not a kiosk in a mall...a real Locksmith).
They supplied a chipped key and they programmed it for me.
They are not "remote" keys, ie they only manually unlock doors and start the car....but I was like you, only had one key when I bought the car 2nd hand.
It was around $100 all up.....pretty good, considering what I'd been quoted by Jeep.

That seems a much more reasonable deal.

Was there anything special required.... or a delay... or is it simple "over the counter" thing ?

Nope...guy did it while I waited....had the key in stock. He needed my current key to copy both the pattern and the chip data.

A good mall key guy would be able to do it aslell. Just shop around. should be around $150 or less for a transponder key cut and programmed. That's without the remote section.
