They are not "remote" keys, ie they only manually unlock doors and start the car....but I was like you, only had one key when I bought the car 2nd hand.
It was around $100 all up.....pretty good, considering what I'd been quoted by Jeep.
I enquired about doing the same for my TJ, it was abit more expensive than you were quoted but it's the best way to do it.

I keep an unchipped key for my JK on a chain. That way when I'm on the beach away from the car I can lock the start keys in it and keep the basic key to lock and unlock it with it.

Being unchipped I can keep it around my neck while I'm in the surf.

Just ordered a spare from my local Locksmith that we have an account with.
$240.00 for the key, $90.00 to code it to the car & $10.00 to cut the key.

Cheers, Craig

Thanks for that advice!

This sounds like a good option since its only a spare key. But does this mean the above quoted post isn't quite correct, and that people other than dealers can code the key?

Thanks, but does this not bring the price - $340 - in line with ordering a genuine key from the dealer? Did you ever quote a price for a coded and cut genuine key?

I had to go to a dealer this morning. They quoted me $695.00 for the transmitter, to have it coded & get the key cut.
Makes my $340.00 look good.

Not true, FCA don't make the transponder chips or even their keys. So the keys you get from new may be branded Jeep but they're technically not genuine.
The locks & keys are made buy a company like Strattaec. Whether it's a "genuine" or after market, they'll all use a Texas Instruments or Phillips chips.

The thing that will bugger up an ECU or skim is a dodgy scan tool bought of fleabay.

There's plenty of options for aftermarket keys for your Jeeps. Last week I added this remote flip key to a 2008 XH Commander
