Default New heads on TD now another issue!!

Hi Guys

Firstly, thanks for all the input from all to this forum. Its been a great resource!

I'll give you a brief background before I get to my current issue.

I brought this 2000 XJ (registered 2001) 2.5TD with an overheating problem that I knew would likely mean head or head gasket.

I stripped it down and did find No2 head cracked and maybe no3 (just visually in pre combustion chamber at glow plug edge)

I have purchased new AMC heads, head bolts and gaskets etc...

Also while waiting for the parts I took out the gearbox, flywheel and housing and fixed the leak from the cam seal. (thanks for the info from here)

Heads arrived, fitted, all back together, started (only one good glow plug I found out later, so a bit rough to start)

So here's were it gets freaky!

Just idling with rear end up on stands to get air out of system, getting up to temp, standing at front of engine, all of a sudden revs to full noise! like full throttle for about 5 seconds!! and I think it cut out just before I ran and turned off the key!

That freaked the shit out of me!!

I'm aware of diesel engines running away on oil etc, so made sure everything was clean and dry when it went back together! Could it run away on oil from the turbo or crankcase blow-by?? or was it a screwed up signal from the ECU??

After I changed my undies and had a beer, I checked it over...

wont start now!

Mechanically still good, compression all 425psi

Oil, coolant all fine. No leaks. (coolant level light still on)

Cranks fine, no check engine light. (fitted new glow plugs)

No fuel to injectors!!! (cranked and tried to bleed-nothing?)

Checked stop solenoid, no power to stop solenoid??

hot wire stop solenoid, still no fuel at injectors??

I think there is also no power to the IP??

I will read the fault codes (if any) when I get home tonight but I'm not much of an auto electrician!

I have checked all the fuses.

I'm really hopeful that some of you knowable people may be able to help?
I've invested a lot into this, to much!!

I'll have to get some pics loaded to my profile!

Thanks in advance

Andrew

So I plugged in a code reader and no codes. Also nothing displayed when reading codes from the odometer?

My only guess is that you originally had the engine running via injectors, a blockage has occurred and then (coincidentally) run away somehow occurred. I’m not sure about run away on blow by, usually I think the mist from the turbo finds it’s way into the intercooler and once the engine is turned off the oil in the intercooler is sucked back back in as a fuel source. A dirty blocked fuel system may be the first thought.

Hi Fishframe

Thanks for reply.

I have new fuel filter. On initial prime to injectors after assembly was seeing fuel at cracked nut after about a half a dosen cranks.

I’m not getting fuel there now because there is no power to the stop solenoid. Supplied 12v from battery but still no fuel at injectors.
It’s not getting past the IP?

I think the whole fuel circuit has no power from the PDC.

Surprised there were no codes?

Cheers Andrew

Have a look at crankshaft sensor above the clutch housing and make sure it is seated properly and not loose ....also the crankshaft sensor wiring harness if not damaged than check all fuses .

Update

Thanks Amlav

I checked the CPS and bingo! Found a tiny peace of plastic stuck in one of the connector pin holes! Well bugger me!

Cleaned and put all back together and started back up strait away.

By the way, the TD has a two wire CPS not the three wire one as on the 4.0 petrol engine! This info is in the parts sticky.

Best to unbolt fuel filter from bracket and move aside and remove crank case breather to gain access to CPS

Cheers Andrew
