The JL Pickup is coming but....

With the spy shots of the new pickup floating around Ausjeepoffroad forum, it begs the question, where will they be putting the spare wheel?

Will they put it somewhere like the test mule from a few years back or the old Willys?

Interesting spot. Could make hard to fit a bigger spare if upgrading to larger rubber. Although same problem if it was under the tray like other utes.

Likely they will position under the tray, as they are focusing on aerodynamics and reducing fuel consumption in the newer range it may be counterproductive to position the spare in readily accessible locations.

Personally, I hate the spare under the tray idea.
ALL of my utes which had this, the first mod was to relocate it, usually to a position upright at the front of the body.
Looking at the Jeep though, I recon I would consider a swing out design similar to what we fit to our JKs now.
The difference could be a multi open position so it could be swung right around to the side for a clear and uncluttered access to the tailgate and load area.
Wouldn't be everyones cup of tea but it will be a rather unique vehicle anyhow so it wouldn't look too much out of place.

I'm with Wazza, all of my Utes have had the spare under the tray and it's a pain. The rims get ruined and there is nothing worse than kneeling in the dirt to get it out.

I'd rather it go on the rear tailgate like they are now and I can't see our nanny laws allowing it to hang off the side.

Aerodynamics, safety, aesthetics, wider than that old photo, they can be dirty so people won't want to brush past it. On the tail gate of a Ute really reduces the Utes practicality.

I can see it only going underneath. Maybe genuine accessories to mount elsewhere will be available
