does anyone no why its doing this?
this is because inside the tube that goes into the fuel tank there is a ball that the fuel needs to pass around first to get into the tank and what happens is the pump pushes out the fuel fast enough that it cant escape around the ball quick enough and backs up which causes the pump to think the cars full and stop sending fuel.....

it will also cause you to not be able to get the tank completely full but the ball is "supposed" to stop you loosing fuel in the event of a rollover....

next time turn the handle almost upside down when pumping... seems to help
nick.

The ball in the filler shouldn't slow the fuel going into the tank. There is an over flow tube that allows air up to the top of the filler neck. When the fuel in the tank gets to the bottom of the over flow tube fuel goes up to the top of the filler tube and this is what triggers the pump to shut off.

Depending on the way the pump is inserted, fuel flow in the top of the filler tube can eddy and go up the small tube on the pump nozzle and trip the cut off. Try not inserting the nozzle in as far, or altering the angle of the nozzle into the filler. If I insert pump nozzles fully into my TJ it cuts off every time. I only have it inserted about half of the maximum, it fills at full flow and cuts off properly every time.

mate i have had the exact same thing since day one of owning my tj, iv just learnt to deal with it as i researched this problem for weeks and couldnt find a definit answer. it takes me anywhere up to 12 mins to fill mine up. i just use it as an excuse to et out and stretch a little more on the longer drives. the best way iv found to do it is to aim the nozzle at the filler hole and fire away at a rate that is constant enough to keep putting fuel in but not so fast as to overflow it.

if you find another way to fill the tj up pm me as id love to be able to do it at a normal rate

I had the same problem when I first got the TJ, but I can now fill up as quick as any other vehicle, I just poke the first inch or two in(to the lump on most nozzles) keep it at the normal angle and she fills up fine.
