Default Removing single rear seat for Fridge

Hi everyone,

While my Jeep is at the dealer awaiting its aftermarket alternator, my mind has been running wild with the things I intend to do to build it up (Finally decided to start doing this after 4 years!).

I'm pretty set on a Murchison snorkel and a 2 inch lift and until recently, I was happy to go on my upcoming trip to fraser with a big esky full of ice. That was until I borrowed a friend's car fridge and everything changed!

A friend of mine has removed the single rear seat of his FJ to fit an ARB fridge and I am thinking of doing the same to my WK2. This would leave room for both of my kids and a full boot. I've done a pretty extensive search of the forum and haven't managed to turn anything up like this idea.

Has anyone done this or seen it done? What are people's thoughts? The only downsides I can see is that it will remove the dead space between the two child seats, where I'd normally just store crap anyway and I'd need to think of another way to carry water, as I had planned to purchase a 40L rear footwell water tank.

I feel like this is an efficient use of space and would give me more flexibility in the boot.

I always had my Prados set up that way, but I felt that creating the same arrangement in the GC either positioned the fridge too close to the roof, too far inboard or too far forward. My 55L BushBoy fridge is a bit of a lump... perhaps the fitment options would suit another product better.

Cheers, Steve

Gday taprod
I did that with my 2012 gc.
Took the passenger side double seat out though. Was quite a few bolts & a bit of dicking about but once i removed it & built the platform for the fridge it worked well.
Made it easy when its only me & the missus.

I also had one mounted there in my old Prado. A company called lifestyleracks made one that attached to the bolts holes left by the seat, but I don’t think they exist anymore.

However, after I installed it I read something about removing “fixed” seats from vehicles and the insurance implications it can have. Not really sure what it was but it might be around airbag deployment or injuries sustained by passengers with bare metal next to them.. who knows but worth thinking about.

Can't you just tilt the seat forward and put the fridge on top of it? That would leave the foot-well free for the water tank and you just take out the fridge and pull the seat back up when you get home. Also. no legal/insurance implications.

I did this in my JK until I got the drawers in the back. Works well and no fuss.

As for legal issues, from memory, you can remove the seats no worries but the seatbelts can't be touched and must remain in place.

This is a good idea, thanks mate. I get the Jeep back today too so I’ll take a look. Key thing is finding anchor points to secure the fridge to if the seat is folded down
