Default WH randomly won't crank?

Gents,

From time to time the Jeep won't crank when I turn the key to start. Sometimes it will crank second go, other times it takes a few goes. It just makes a relay click and then there's nothing.

From time to time I've got it to crank by moving the gear lever through the gate and back to park again, so I think this may be an inhibitor switch issue?

I get no fault codes specific to the error, but sometimes I get a radio communication fault, and sometimes a trans communication fault. Sometimes, most recently, the wipers start when the car won't crank?

Any ideas, opinions? Brand new battery too.

Regards,

Robert

I get no crank some times, my problem is a worn ignition. The contacts in the module on the back of the ignition have play/wear & I need to apply a lot of clockwise pressure to make proper contact to start.

The part number I need is 56055400AC; 56055400AB; 56055400AA

I have pulled mine apart & cleaned up the contacts, so far so good but eventually I will need to replace it or fit a push to start button.

Whoa! In a 10 year old car and the switch is already failing...

I wonder if the recall for the ignition switch ever eventuates, will that resolve this too?

No, this part is not what they replace.

Clarky, don't suppose you (or anyone else) can confirm this is the part?

Key barrel modules usually fail early on all cars if you have a habit of driving with a bunch of heavy keys in the barrel. Driving offroad does not help things.

I don't drive with any keys on it, but I can't speak for the original owner.

There's a fair bit of in/out play on the barrel. If I push it in it usually starts. This afternoon it just wouldn't go at all. Missus finally got it running. I'll take it apart on the weekend and clean it as Clarky has done.
