I cant find a post via search that mentions this, but today my AW4 cable failed, only lucky it happened in my driveway, after picking up my son.
No park, and handbrake wont hold, cant start either..very close behind another car!
get my son to block wheels,
part of the shifter cable has failed
the arrowed section is made of PLASTIC, and retains the cable in a bracket.
the retaining lugs on one side have sheared away, meaning the cable moves in the retaining bracket, and selector lever was unable to move properly, if at all.
I inspected my white XJ, so I can see what a good one look like, and will probably have to swap out that cable.
In the meanwhile I have wrapped 0.5mm ire in a figure 8 pattern, to hold the cable still in the bracket, and allow me to start the vehicle, and look like it will hold temporarily at least.
On inspection, I can see this problem must have been coming for a while, as the plastic is chaffed & cracked, would not have let go at once, but worn over time, so a heads up to check.
would have been bad to have this happen one one on, out on the road, as the vehicle is completely immobilised (and park cannot be selected)
note to self..re-adjust the handbrake so it hold...again
anyone else experienced this?
