Lift and tyre questions.

After owning a few Jeeps for a few years now namely CJ's and Grands, I have just purchased my first XJ for a back up vehicle, being a 97 Classic.

Robin - what was that rumble Batman.
Batman - Oh no Robin I think the Jeep God just fell off his esky.

Jokes aside to the XJ drivers I have given shit to in the past.

I bought it as deceased estate. It has only 85000 on the clock and is rocko stocko.
It has a well documented service history, but it will still need some magic mechanic stuff to make it like it should be. It is a Jeep after all.
To be truthful I am impressed with the on road performance and the comfort over a CJ.
And as you guys in this section always preach they are just as great off road as well. (cough choke tears in the eyes, "can't be true")

However I am a big guy I will need to modify the seat to move it back for some leg room. Any sugestions or pics on this having been done??

How much lift does it need to run 31's? I would to run Cooper ST's on 8 inch rims.

What rario's does this 97 auto petrol have?


It has speakers in the back on the roof. How do they turn on? They dont seem to work. It still has the factory wireless.

Hello Kev seatwise on the southside do a mod to move the seat back. 3" lift will be good with 31s. All XJs had 3.54 gears with will be ok for 31s but 4.56 would be better.

The factory rims are 7" wide and will go just fine with 31's

Diff should be 3:55,it will be tall geared with 31" tyres,may I suggest 9R's as a "better" fit.The gearing will not be as tall,and tyres will clear alot better.Neat 2" left in the front with 2.5"-3" in the rear would be good to avoid annoying driveline vibes etc..

the rear speakers might just the be the balancer thing on the head unit, its like a circular piece around the volume knob that rotates seperately and adjusts the sound between the front and rear

The petrols are 3.55, the diesels are 3.73.
As ER suggested 30's are a great fit for a 1-3" lift with full travel and very little limiting is required.
30's on 3.73's make the gearing basically stock again.
For 31's uptravel and steering limits need to be applied to stop the tyres from scubbing badly on just about everything.
Moving the seat is pretty easy if you a bit handy, the base unbolts from the seat allowing lots of possibilities...

I have to say 31x10.5r15 work perfect on standard rims with 3" lift. Flexs very well and the only place it rubs is on full lock it just touchs the sway bar, thats of course when its connected.

All jeeps are different apparently. Some people have heaps of trouble fitting 31" having to run massive bump stop extentions and trimming all the guards. Guess I was lucky

im running 31x10.5 on 8 inch rims works a treat
with 3.5inch lift got shitloads of flex but i have me gaurds trimed with bushwacker flat flares on
