Default KK 3.7L Starting Problems

Have a KK Limited 3.7L petrol. Occasionly wont crank, turn the key and a click is heard like the starter trying to engage but not, checked battery voltage is above 13v. This happened at 102000km, so no warranty. Found out new genuine starter is just under $200, so ordered and installed. Problem still there, not as much at start but becoming more regular now.
Anyone else had these problems and can point me elswhere than the starter?

I know you said you have 13 volts at the battery but what are the terminals like,
Are they clean free of corrosion and tight?.
Have you tried another battery on the chance yours is beginning to fail?.

I have accidentally locked my XJ and when I turned the key the starter had a faint click instead of throwing in but I would suggest a thorough check of the battery as per Glenno72.
Measure on the connectors and not the terminals, and again after it wont start. When it does start, measure the voltage with the high beams on and see how high it goes, if it goes up last say 14 half then you have a battery problem (ie the alternator is wacking a charge into the battery). It has 13 volts, a charged battery should have about 13.5 in it.

dont think that you have a spark plug problem if you can hear clicking.... id start by checking the terminals, give em a clean, check the connectors to ensure they are secured, check that the cables are properly seated and tight, check the engine earth strap to ensure it hasnt wiggled loose, load check the battery, if the battery is a sealed acid battery its hard to see if it's starting to drop a cell but may have a red/green indicator on the top of it and if the battery is close to three years think about replacement seeings the starter has been replaced, but if it is a servicable battery open up each of the cell fill up cap and ensure that distilled water is at normal levels and if you are able to get it started pull one cap off at a time carefully to see if the battery is bubbling inside if so its fooked... What is the draw on the battery when starting, are any accessories/lights/doors on or open when starting requiring a higher current draw?

Are you sure that the teeth in the engine are not stuffed seeings the starter was replaced? is the starter properly connected? is the thick wire going to the starter on firmly?

Yeah, should be either the spark plug or the battery.

My CRD used to experience starting problem like yours, it turned out to be the battery from NRMA that is causing the failure.
