Kero is ok for cleaning parts as long as they can be blown off with air to dry the parts and remove traces of kero.
It is not an oil such as diesel, and if oil is contaminated with kero the oil will take on an slightly abbrasive characteristic. Kero can be when cutting threads etc.
The fact that residue will be very hard to clean froman assembled diff is why it should not be used. The same as any other cleaners.
Brake clean is a chlorinated hydrocarbon and needs to be handled with care. PPE.

Kero
At the risk of sending this thread off on a tangent (not my intention):
I wud have to say blue Kerosine is essentially a fuel for heating.
I assume the point you are heading to is valid, that it is not a good idea to wash an assembled diff or any other complex mechanical component with it. Good point.
Kero and I'm not discussing parrafin (for the old timers like myself), CAN be a good cutting compound for Aluminium, and sometimes brass, maybe a few other free-cutting materials depending on the alloys the end use of the thread and a whole list of factors I won't go near cos it wud rob the thread. This is an old-school approach and OK in a pinch. There are much better alternatives around for thread cutting.
It is no longer a fuel for running IC engines in this country as they have pretty much ceased fractionating it although av-gas runs close in the column I think. I don't need suggestions thanks guys. I'm OK with that.
Cheers

Avgas is like petrol for IC Engines. The stuff you speak of is Called Jet A-1, some times call Avtur. It's a type of Kero with other stuff in it.

Keith,
thankyou. That is precisely my point. Some folks (often old buggers like myself) like to run their pre- 1955 agricultural machinery on blends that include Avgas types as available, with other voodoo and still only start the engine on petrol due to it having such poor UCL for continuous running of these old engines.
Are we not off topic here?
Cheers
