Get it sorted DionM ??

Any decent little welding shop should be able to manage it for you.

Nah I'm still deliberating. Adding to the mix is the fact we may be selling the XJ soonish anyway (need a bigger 4WD).

I'm not an expert, but I run a Transmission temp guage and to keep the temps down, I try to keep the torque converter locked up, that way there is no slippage with the torque converter. With slippage comes heat generation. I drive around town in 3rd gear and notice the difference. My temp sensor is in the cooling line coming out of the transmission using a brass 'T' connector.

What sort of temp variations have you noticed between using third gear and leaving it in O/Drive with that sensor location ???

And while on the subject of torqueconverters ....

Was at a place in Sydney recently who reckon the XJ torque converter is not a bad unit.

When it dies from old age / wear & tear ... they also do a rebuild for a coupla 100 bucks ... cheaper than U.S. newies imported.

SlingShot ... ph 02 96883085 ... for anybody thats interested.

Must admit with any auto I've owned I've always driven it in 3 for speeds below 80, and when towing the minute it gets hilly I always drop it back to 3rd as well. Would be interested in seeing any actual temperature differences.

I find when I drive around the suburbs in 4th, the temp sits around 90. If I drive around in 3rd, it sits around 80 degs. I also drive in 3rd below 80 as I have larger wheels and standard diff ratios. My brothers Jeep has problems locking up the TC when the engine temps go above 100 degs. The TC will not lock up at any speed, which causes all the temps to go even higher.
