Default rear window fitting??

Hi all
We just got back from a 7500k trip from Sydney to Ayers rock via the Flinders and Oonandatta, great trip but i learned a lesson about towing on gravel roads and what happens if you don't protect you rear window. ie it smashed soon after we left the black top.

So I haven't got any quotes to replace it yet but I am assuming that flat peace of glass is worth a fortune, so I may look for a second hand one but I have never fitted glass before, is it a diy job?
Any tips or recommendations on glass replacement in Sydney are appreciated.
Cheers Richard

use chord/rope around seal to pull the edges of the seal inwards from inside the back of your xj while someone is pushing from the outside the rope is just to clear the rubber from around the frame.is it an update xj?

If it just held in with a rubber moulding this is what you do.

Place the moulding on the glass then wrap a piece of cord, say 3mm nylon, around three sides (2 sides and top) pushing the cord deep into the slot. Then place the glass and moulding onto the bottom side of the opening. Important..use lots of lubricant, neat dishwashing liquid or similar, don't use grease. Push the cord ends through the opening and then simply pull the cord out a bit at a time to manoeuvre the moulding over the lip of the frame. Easy.

Hope this helps.

It is surprising how many people do that when towing, but easy forgotten I suppose!

did this recently on the Nullabor, had it replaced in Adelaide at a do it while you wait window place, was less than $300 installed, I've got windscreen cover so I didn't pay a cent but it's not as expensive as what I thought it'd be, think it was around $240-50 by memory
