Exclamation Warning - Absestos Contamination

The area in and around Wittenoom is heavily contaminated with blue asbestos fibres. Exposure to these fibres presents a public health risk that could result in mesothelioma, lung cancer or asbestosis.

"Travelling in the area should be avoided."

hahaha - its has been like that for 50 years mate...

The last residents only moved out a year or so ago.

Its beautiful country to - definately worth the visit - just DO NOT kick the dust or go when the wind is blowing. Better yet - take a dust mask

yeah been there when I was living up at tom price- what an awesome spot! (too bad about the asbestos) Drove onto the river bed, looked around and saw loads of asbestos encased in the river stone, doh! All those poor people still being severley affected by the accompanying diseases didn't even know at the time- bloody terrible..

legend has it that now that its officially a ghost town, the warning signs literally go accross the road now so you can really say you missed the signs or anything seeing you'd have to drive off the road to actually get in there.

None the less - if anyone is in the area - DEFINATELY go in there to the gorges just be careful and aware of the dangers if you kickup or the wind blows the dust around, its truly gods country with a hellish twist.

If thats the best you can do with your first post, quit while you're ahead. Thats one of the most ridiculous statements I've read on this forum yet!

Whilst I wouldn't wish Asbestosis on a stranger (maybe rapists, paedophiles and that kind of scum though), in WA you have to be a definate kind of stupid to get to/ go to Wittenoom unawares or unprepared.

Magic country area though.
The suits get fkn hot inside though. Better than breathing, etc.
