Ground problem in the instrument cluster? I agree with Murray.
This would be where I would look first.
X3
Every earth (ground ) needs to be cleaned.
Engine noise has me wondering though.
Maybe a dirty lifter.
That is not the ECU near the engine. Its the PCM. The ECU is inside the car behind the center console.

Default VM TD2.5 Electrical, running problem (Local garages cant help) Please Help

Interesting I experienced the same problem not too long ago in my 99. I left the battery off for a few days and was about I call a tow truck when I re connected and it worked and has not had a problem since (touch wood). Since I had bought the car the PCM had been loose in the engine bay and would wobble around at high speeds. I checked the connection to the PCM and tightened the fasteners back up and it seemed to resolve my issue. After reading around however I did find a few threads where users had removed the dash to find corroded connections from the cluster.

Out of curiosity Murray how long does it take to remove the dash ?

It could well be corrosion .. or just grime over the grounds.

Okay well the PCM is clean and that didnt make a difference so i will look into the ECU connections etc behind dash

Does anyone have any detail to get to and remove the dash/clocks?

also reference the grounds i have no idea where to start .. i dont even know where the ground is on the block

correct me if I'm wrong but, if there is an issue with fuel supply don't diesel make a knocking noise (injector knock)?

Possibility if above is correct:
could be an electric fault from an earth or something and starving the engine of fuel causing a knocking noise??

you remove the centre trim around the CD Palyer,
pop the top of the dash off,
unscrew the section around the cluster/speedo
then undo the screws on the cluster
and it pops out.
