Default towing questions

Hi All
I have a camper trailer and i am thinking of buying a jk 2 door diesel as my tow car. My camper weighs 1460 kgs plus 180 kgs on tow ball, i know the unlimited would be more suitable as a tow vechile but i really prefer the 2 door. Do any of you tow similar weights with the 2 door and if so what mods have you done to improve your towing ability. I was thinking perhaps polyair bags would help , does anyone use a similar set up? I am relying on your help and input on this, i currently own a landcruiser v8 diesel but i have caught the Jeep bug and i am sure the wrangler would be up to the task.
regards and thankyou in advance,SnowyX5

Snowy, that tow weight is within the limits of the 2 door which is 1600 kg but it is over the tow ball weight for both the 4 dr (170 kg) and the 2 dr (160 kg).

If you can move some weight back in the camper to unload the tow ball, there is no reason why you couldn't get away with a 2 dr.

With that much of a tongue load I'd want to help the rear end out with some polyairs.

the long wheel base would be a much better choice for towing. the wrangler long wheelbase is in reality a medium wheelbase. by the time you put the camper on the back you will find you need the extra room in the back for storage.

I run Polyair bags inside my rear springs on my lifted KJ CRD. They are great for stabilising the rear end for towing, while still maintaining ride height. However, air bags will limit your rear axle articulation somewhat. Even if deflated to '5psi' which is the bump stop pressure they still take up space inside the spring and can limit compression and bind on the inside of the spring in severe compressoin situations. Having said that, they can't be beat for towing.

If yu use a load distribution hitch your towball limit can increase about 50kg

It might be worth reading this post on the subject:

"Weight distribution bars are for blacktop/gravel roads etc & can bend stuff off road as well as resticting suspension travel."
