over here aroung milford and queenstown if you DON'T CARRY chains you will be fined up to $750 plus huge cost to tow car out
have seen them used over here in the mud as well
try your local chain supplier guys the supply tie down chains for truck's etc they may be set up to make them to suit your tyres
and as suggested keep looking on ebay or advertise in local paper
my 2cent worth

have you ever driven over Mt Skene after a snow fall? You need chains - believe me.
We regulary cross Skene in the snow & chains certainly aren't required, in fact quite to the contry, when it gets deep (1m+) we have found chains can even be a disadvantage.
Snow chains are misnamed as far as I'm concerned. They should really be called ice chains as that it what they are good for. With reduced tyre pressures snow gives relatively good traction. It's on compacted snow or black ice that chains are required & is the reason they must be carried & fitted at many Alpine resorts in Australia.

question, what are the best tyres for snow?
In the Alpine resorts the favored tyres are normally skinny with a deep straight All Terrain pattern. In deep snow up on Mt Skene for example we find an oversized Mud terrain pattern performs well. Swamper type tyres can be OK but I've seen them bury the car as they dig in very easy.

Here's another one to get you in the mood for the weekend Kitrino.

1st one over the summit after a fresh 1 metre dump. (No chains) Now I just need to get a few photo's of the Jeep in the snow seeing I bought it after last season. Might even have to slip over tommorrow & mess it all up before the weekend crowd get there. Over half a metre at the moment.

I Beleive the latest thinking from the rally scene is that studs (and by default chains - not that rally cars would use chains) give you less grip in snow. The best grip you can get in these conditions is snow on snow, so the more your tyres pack the snow into the tread and don't fling it out the better your traction will be. So take it slow and on't spin the wheels.

That said you still get fined in lots of places if you got there without them.
