Default Cant shift into 1st-column shift

I've noticed I'm running out of travel with the steering column lever to get into 1st on my new CJ7 quadra trac heep....

Can do it by moving the linkage in the engine bay, but no go on the steering column -the whole setup on the column is pretty sloppy and has a fair bit of freeplay in between gears.. anybody got the same dramas...?

Thinking three on the tree Holdens here.. always issues eventually but usually the bent collar/slot in the column giving too much play to the linkages. Fixed by bending it narrower with a screwdriver.. few mm made a difference...of course the bushes were probably rat shyte which meant the tolerances were out in the first place. just a thought to maybe get it going but don't know the mechanics in this jeep shift.
